Modeling Outline
Two Outlines for Modeling Extraordinary Behavior
The first is from the book by David Gordon and Dawes: (will be the model for the Wednesday evening workshop starting February 10:
1.0 Ask self: What do I want to be able to do?
1.1 Find exemplars:
1.2 Elicit Abilities
1.3 Elicit Subabilities
1.4 AISB
2.0 Modeling elicitation protocol
2.1 Ask exemplar to DEFINE ability
2.2 Identify 3 examples of manifesting ability
2.3 Pick HOME example “Tell me about [example] as an example of [ability].
2.4 Identify CRITERION operating in example
2.5 Find CRITERION in other 2 examples to confirm and refine CRITERION for ability
2.6 Elicit rest of Belief Template for Home & other 2 examples
- 2.6.1 Definition
- 2.6.2 Evidence
- 2.6.3 Enabling & Motivating Cause-Effects
2.7 Elicit Primary & Secondary STRATEGIES – Home then other 2
2.8 Elicit SUSTAINING EMOTION in Home then other 2 examples
2.9 Elicit EXTERNAL BEHAVIOR in Home then other 2 examples
3.0 Create a Model
4.0 Refine what is necessary and sufficient
5.0 Acquire the Model, STEP IN
6.0 TEST in the world, refine until..
7.0 CRITERION: Elicitation questions
7.1 “When you are [ability], what is important to you?”
7.2 “When you are [ability], what are you evaluating?”
8.0 DEFINITION: Elicitation questions
8.1 “What is [criterion]?”
8.2 “What do you mean by [criterion]?”
9.0 EVIDENCE:
9.1 “What do you see, hear, and/or feel that lets you know there is [criterion]?”
10.0 Beliefs – Enabling Cause-Effect
10.1 “What enables someone to [criterion]?”
10.2 What is necessary for there to be [criterion]?
11.0 Beliefs – Motivating Cause-Effect
11.1 “Why is [criterion] important?”
11.2 “What does [criterion] lead to make possible?”
12.0 Supporting Beliefs
13.0 Strategies
13.1 Primary Strategy
13.2 Secondary Strategies
14.0 Emotions
14.1 Signal Emotions
15.0 External Behavior
16.0 Contributing factors
17.0 Create Initial Array
18.0 Complete the Array
19.0 Acquisition
20.0 Integration – become competent
The Second Outline:
This Outline is consistent with Robert Dilts Modeling of Modeling and my own notes for Modeling (below)
Ability: Help people make changes
Facilitate opening people up
I initiate people in getting what they want
Like a flower opening
What I do: I know how to be with people in such a way they can make the changes to get what they want out of life
What’s Important…?
I be with people
I pay attention to what is going on from their point of view – going on for them
What evaluating?
Calibrating what they do and say, taking it all in
What tools can be applied…
Definition:
Being with people or coach them…
I get people with them
I connect with people
I listen
I try to get out of the way they process it…
Evidence:
See: focus on person in a particular way, minute physiological communications
Hear: how they say what they say in what order, sometimes I go peripheral, sounds in the room, etc.
Feel: connected, what they feel, sense of possibility, think they can change something like ‘hope’
Enabling Cause-Effect:
The philosophical background – people get to open to who they really are, Believe people can change,
Ablility to pay attention to minute physiological changes,
People return to what they started out to be, Belief they want to return, process of unearthing what is already there
What is necessary for someone to X?: [Enabling Cause-Effect]
They have to establish and maintain rapport, have ability to pace and lead.
Training – framework or how to lead someone from what doesn’t not work to what does
Curiosity – I don’t have to know what they mean
Why CRITERION important?: [Motivating Cause-Effect]
Get inside their feedback loop
You get possibility to change
3rd person
Leads to or makes possible?:
Things unfold, you know where to intervene
Inside: Being with people, connecting and evaluating
Outside: Maintain rapport, sometimes interpreting or clarifying
Normally do or usually doing when…?: Ask probing questions, mid section
Secondary Strategy: When ineffective or does not work?:
Always works, whatever happens is perfect and leads to outcome, sometimes outcome can change
Tools:
Signal Emotion:
They suggest themselves, come up, popping up, rise up, be with whatever emotion client is experiencing then lead them to somewhere else
[Strategy] May wait, timing, gap, after person has expressed themselves, when I see they are going off onto an old pattern, I may interrupt
Background emotion?:
That moving forward, sense of possibility, curiosity, confident can change, I care, I am for them
Do on outside: I pay attention, focus, do rapport skills, or I shift/pattern interrupt
Contributing factors:
I check at various points to make sure person is enrolled in change, must
Willing to change, I give permission to change and create safety for fully communication and change
