Listening Skills

Committed Partnerships

Listening is a key competency of excellent teams. At NLP Coaching & Skills Training Institute, when we say 'listening' we are not talking about just what we hear. We think of 'listening' as a full communication loop.

It includes what someone says, what is heard, and it includes paying attention to other subtle clues about what we can observe in the actual behavior of others.  It also includes how we process, speak, and focus attention in a communication. 

Listening is the complete bio-feedback loop.  It is dynamic and changing in every moment as I take in your communication, process it, and add to what you have just communicated.   

Paying Attention

A well-known study by Albert Mehrabian suggests that in face-to-face, one-on-one communication that was focused on liking between participants, people pay attention to much more than just the meaning of the words that are used.  Regardless of how our teachers told us we should listening to what is sai, that how commuication that is actually received is highly skewed towards subtle autitory and visual cues and the not the meaning of the words.

Only about 7% is in the WORDS or Verbal cues.  38% of the communication is determined from TONALITY or Vocal cues, in other words, 'how' a commuication is delivered.  More that that, 55% of the communication is received due to PHYSIOLOGY or Body Language inside a communication.  Later, another researcher, Birdwhistell, noticed in his literature review that in Mehrabian's study that 93% of a communication is actually received due to other that the meaning of the words. This 93% of the communication tends to be largely below the conscious threshold. 

We Detect Incongruity

We tend to take communication in as a whole.  Although an individual may tell something is true, we can actually get a completely different message.  If the person's head is shaking back and forth and he moves his eyes up and to our left, and if his face turns slightly red or he has an odd hand gesture that is incongruent with the spoken message, we are likely not believe what was said.  How do this happen? 

Reading Subtle Communication Cues

This training seminar will expand your ability to pay attention to subtle communication clues and get you outside your own filters. It will also examine values, how they are formed, and how they drive behavior. Learn the power of speaking from values and recognizing valued as they are expressed by others. You will come away from this training seminar with a deepened understanding of where other people are coming from and how to interact in a way that honors each person and what is important to them individually.

Co-workers will learn fast and efficient ways of working together and cooperating in whatever work is at hand. Participants will also learn a model for getting to the real issues behind complaints and disagreements to move an organization forward effectively toward the breakthrough goals and outcomes the team and organization say they are committed to accomplishing.
